How to Save Money with Great Gift Ideas

Take several hours out of your busy schedule for a single day and save yourself hundreds of dollars each year on gift shopping.

Organizing Your Gift-Giving Needs

Create an Excel spreadsheet and save it to your desktop where it is easily accessible. Leave the first row empty. Start with the second row. In the first column (Column A) second row, write down all the recipients you intend to get gifts for throughout the year. Pretend you are making Santa’s List for Christmas and make a comprehensive list. Include your family, friends, relatives, neighbors, co-workers, employees, etc. Remember, this spreadsheet will serve as your Gift Shopping Guide for the whole year. One time set-up, with use for the whole year!

After you have entered the names of all your recipients, beneath the names in the 1st column, include several rows for unexpected occasions such as weddings, baby showers, bridal showers, and such.

Then, in the header row, starting with Column B row 1, enter the all the important and known dates you will be getting gifts for. Birthdays, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Anniversaries, already announced weddings, Christmas, etc. After you are done with entering the specific dates for each occasion, in the very last column of your header, enter “TBD” to indicate your gift amount set aside for unexpected events. It will resemble a chart like this:

Finally, your matrix is set up and you can begin to plug in gift amounts for each occasion or event per recipient. Tally up the subtotals for each date and then generate your grand total. This will be the total amount you should set aside for the whole year. Determine a budget that both fits your needs and that you can afford. Most importantly, never deviate from your budget!

Now, you will never forget an important occasion or go over your budget for gifts!
